Congratulations, you have chosen to play a Paladin. If this is the first time you have played a Paladin you should find this information helpful to help get you going. Here we will give a general overview of basic Paladin play and some points on getting your Paladin on it's way too the higher levels A.S.A.P.
Playing a Paladin is great fun but it also requires considerable flexibility. One moment you may be tanking for your group, and then you will concentrating on your DPS skills, and shortly after that you end up playing the part of a healer. As a Paladin you will have to be able to adapt to these different situations at a moments notice. The Paladin is an expert in melee combat being highly skilled with both swords and maces, but is very limited when it comes to long range attacks. Fortunately this is not much of an issue since the Paladin will pretty much always be engaged in hand to hand combat.
Some points to consider when choosing a Paladin race:
When starting out as a Paladin in the original world of Warcraft it was a Alliance only class with only two races to choose from. You could play as a dwarf or a human and that was it. While both races made excellent Paladins they were pretty much equal, not leaving any variety for the Paladin. As a human Paladin you gained a 10% bonus to reputation gained. As a dwarf Paladin you had the bonuses of Stone Form and Cold Resistance, and the Gun specialization of dwarves was of no use. Pretty much six of one and half a dozen of the other.
Not until the Burning Crusade expansion did the Paladin class expand to allow the new blood elf horde race to assume the Paladin role bringing with them the Arcane Torrent skill. Also the new Alliance race, the draenei is now able to become a Paladin bringing their Hot spell and aura of plus hit %.
In the beginning levels you will want to play defensively, don't get yourself into situations that are too much for you to handle. When your character dies you waste a long time getting back to your stuff and your equipment loses durability so keep dying to a minimum.
Take on all the quests in any given area. There are many quests to take and you should not skip any one of them during you first several levels.
Train, train, train.
Be sure to learn as much as possible from your available trainer before moving on to another area of world of Warcraft. And don't forget to look into what professions you might be interested in pursuing. Professions research is important, don't ignore them. Some professions are very good money makers, use this early level learning time to think about how you will build your character into the powerhouse you want it to be. It might be a little early to mention this but try to save a little gold. At level 20 you will be able to purchase a mount making it much quicker to travel in world of Warcraft. So keep that in mind as you level up your character.
Soloing or playing with a group:
Being that the Paladin is an excellent melee fighter with both offensive and defensive auras and has self healing abilities, it is a perfect soloing character. The Paladin is very well adapted to solo play and should take advantage of that fact. I recommend soloing as much as possible and only join a group when you come upon very challenging areas. Groups usually welcome Paladins with open arms as the are a valuable addition to any group.
Early on I recommend that you spec retribution which will give a bonus to your melee damage. If you prefer a one handed weapon along with a shield that's fine, but I find that a good two handed axe, sword or hammer works the best. You want to think about pure damage, dealing out as much damage you can with every hit. A two handed weapon will inflict more DPS than a one handed weapon. I don't rule out keeping a nice one handed weapon and shield in your inventory, there will be times where they will be more effective than a two handed weapon but stick with the high DPS two handed weapon most of the time.
On the flip of using a high DPS two handed weapon you will want to get mail armor as soon as possible, preferably with bonuses to strength and stamina. Don't worry too much about other bonuses just yet you will get them in time.
There is not much to say about leveling a Paladin in the early levels. The Paladin is a well rounded fighter, just use your auras and fight your way through the levels. It is actually easier than you would expect.
